So my sister-in-law moved into her first apartment and as a house warming gift/birthday gift i decided to design and build her a coffee table using bottle caps and slate tile.
It was a lot of fun to build and kept me busy for a bit but here is the table.
So I have been working on this piece lately using leftover cut bottle tops. Originally I had no use for these items, but like most things, the work that was done was done out of simple admiration for the materials and the natural process, which has come to fruition these past two and a half years. While these materials were put together mental images, emotions, and content started to meld together and become a part of this seemingly banal action that was initially done out of instinctual material connectedness; which formed and melded itself into a piece that was more than a nice attempt or quick exit to the “maybe another time box” (which there tends to be a few pieces that are there constantly).
The point in which this piece has entered is interesting because for the first
time I have piece that is confused as to where it will be placed when it is finished. N0t simply wanting to relegate itself to the sanctuary of the art Gallery this piece has expressed admiration’s to be outside in in the grass free from the bonds of a four-sided dry-walled container. currently I have no idea what the final result will be. The piece currently is not finished, so it would be
futile for me in good conscience to relegate this piece to the standard fixing that has been to done to so many works that have raw potential but were force fitted and preemptively finished without cognition of the pieces intricacies and inherent wants.
The piece should be finished soon and with brevity and as much ease that can be expected with a piece that is done out of simple unadulterated admiration and process.
We are the remnant, a thing that is to be treasured. In this day and age it is important for us to remember that we need to be focused of being obedient to the will of the lord. “But I will leave among you A humble and lowly people, and they will take refuge in the name of the LORD (Zephaniah 3:12).” We find our refuge in the lord. He has proclaimed victory before victory was known. With this knowledge we know that our lives are forfeit to him. Yet we have a gracious God who provides salvation. This time however we see that salvation was provided by the Son of God a perfect and holy gift.
Currently I have been dealing with these issues in my pieces. Especially in the three pieces I have finished in the past couple months. The pieces that have reached fruition have all been created out of hot glue. Although there titles are not set in stone the meanings are resolved. The first piece which was finished which will be called A was an experimentation of two forms that fortunately worked its way to completion.
It is three strands of rope with bulb like egg forms that are dangling in repose. The three forms could suggest overtly the trinity. This assumption would not be far stretched. It does deal with the trinity, but with the purpose being an exploration of the trinity that was known during the Old Testament. Examples of this are found in Ezekiel, Isaiah, and various other examples.
The second piece which will be called B was the second phase of my glue experimentation. The idea of rope making was prevalent but the form went beyond rope and took the form of an umbilical cord. The purpose of the piece is to address the idea of the new spiritual birth in the faith. The end of the cord is left empty as if to suggest that the person viewing it is the one who came from the cord.
The third one which has been at the center of the thought, which will be known as C, is dealing with the book of Lamentations and Zephaniah, The idea that our God loves us so much that even when we turn to our idols his love never ceases and he provides refuge, a remnant, things
which we don’t deserve. This piece has manifested itself into a rope of twined glue that is approximately 40 ft long and ends in a hive. the photos of this piece are taken inside a studio, and it is imperative to understand that this piece is the first step of an installation.
All three pieces are working together but all speak of their own accord. Hopefully soon God will reveal the names of these pieces that have been made as a gift to him, to his glory, and his work.
In April I endeavored into a new way to make sculptures out of bottles. the result was a new visually appealing sculpture that was hitting at issues I have been dealing with in my pieces, now however the pieces were hitting those notes stronger and harder. The piece was titled Nehemiah #2 and is a continuation what Nehemiah #1 was discussing. the issues that are being discussed are issues of community and a culture ebbing and flowing with the City of God. Using the name Nehemiah to address the piece is to call into attention the real purpose of Nehemiah’s call to build the wall. The purpose not being just a physical object but an event to restore the community that was lost from the exile.
The piece that is being featured here was first placed in a Belhaven University sculpture Crit. Later the piece was accepted into Belhaven Universities Summer Collective 2010: Sculpture and photography. The Piece can be viewed at the Bitsy Irby Visual Arts and Dance Center art Gallery all summer.
February 20, 2010 the Belhaven University art exhibition was held. I was fortunate enough to have three of my pieces accepted into the Gallery. I was humbling and I am truly grateful to have critics validate my work.
The three works chosen were Sanctuary, Anamnesis, and untitled (Bottles #2). They were all sculptures. Sanctuary which was featured during the process in a prior blog post was completed and was really set off well with the light. Anamnesis (meaning the ability to not forget) was a hanging sculpture. Finally untitled (bottles #2) was a floor sculpture which is six feet tall, ten feet long and four feet wide. All three sculptures continue my series in dealing with using regular everyday items to capture the ideas of memory, repression, sanctification and issues dealing with the modern day church. Anamnesis in particular deals with the idea of repression and memory
feeding off personal experience. Sanctuary in short is an explication on the safety and life in the fold of God. Finally untitled deals with the theory of what the church should be and interconnected network of individuals joined by prayer and common spirit, finding its form in a neuro-network of bottles.
My apologies for the delay in writing but the show consumed so much time that there was simply no time. Thank you for reading.
